    ADULT LEARN-TO-SAIL 2008

US SAILING Certified Instructors teach new sailors the basics of the sport, conduct sailing drills on land and in the water to put theory into practice, and supervise the students so they may gain confidence and proficiency in the skills learned. Class size is limited to 18 students, thus allowing plenty of on-the-baot coaching. Students should be at least 18 years of age to participate in the course. The class will meet as scheduled, even in inclement weather (we have an attractive trailer/classroom), unless we notify you to the contrary (extreme weather conditions) by e-mail or telephone.

Our typical curriculum (weather permitting) starts with orientation to the sport, some land drills, and a first sail debriefing and review. As soon as possible, we'll learn capsize-recovery, with plenty of practice available throughout the course.

The remaining sessions will focus on essential skills and tactics: the safety position, tacking, jibing, reaching, beating upwind, running downwind, and sailing a triangular course around buoys. There are usually 2 students per boat, so we encourage the sharing of time at the helm/tiller to learn boat handling skills. For more information or any questions you may have, please contact Terry Chase (410+592-2727).

Students should wear loose clothing that is light-colored and breathable (dress in layers on cool days), foul-weather gear, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, non-skid boat shoes avoid sandals or other open-toed shoes. Bring a swim suit, towels, and an extra change of clothing for the capsize/recovery drill on the first day. We will provide life jackets (PFDs - Personal Flotation Devices).

Tuition is only $179 payable to the Community Colleges of Baltimore County (CCBC) at 410+869-0296 or online at http://www.ccbcmd.edu/ceed/boating.html. Please have the CRN# available for the course in which you wish to enroll.
