Sir Francis Drake Completed his Circumnavigation of the world in
1580, the first Englishman to do so. It took him
almost three years, as it had Ferdinand Magellan
in 1517. The yacht America beat the
British in a race around the Isle of Wight in 1851. That
took 10 hours.
Bill Ball and Rodrigue Spinette won the Dutch Cup in 2002
by circumnavigating Hart-Miller Island in a grueling 285
minutes. The thirteenth annual
race around Hart-Miller will be held this year on September
8.
The starting signal will be sounded at noon for competitors
in all sorts of centerboard craft, wind- surfers included.
