PRIDE OF bALTIMORE ii

The Pride of Baltimore II is partnering with the Baltimore

County Sailing Center (BCSC), located in Rock Point Park

to help students of color to learn to sail and appreciate their

local rich maritime history.

They have generously sponsored 5 campers with scholarships

for a 2 week summer sailing experience, selected by

application. Camps run Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to

4 p.m. with bus service from 2 locations in the Baltimore area.

Sailors will learn the fundamental skills of sailing and develop

confidence on the water. The program is hosted in BCSC owned

boats. By the end of their first week, campers will sail across

Hawk Cove to Hart Miller Island for a picnic lunch. During

graduation, at the end of their second week, sailors will have the

opportunity to show their families all that they have learned. Your

amazement with their skills will be matched by their sense of

accomplishment.

Skills: Boater Safety, Points of Sail, Seamanship, Launching and landing,

Rigging and de-rigging, Capsize and recovery, Tiller steering, Tacking

and gybing. At a pre-arranged date, the sailors, with an adult chaperone

will be offered an opportunity to participate in a 2-3 hour sail aboard the

Pride of Baltimore II. If these campers continue to acquire a love of

sailing, they will be offered additional opportunities to engage with

the Pride and could eventually apply to train on the ship for a possible

crew position when they turn 18.
