Meeting New Friends - Making a Difference
What actually goes on behind the Scenes at the Baltimore County Sailing Center?
What does it take to run a sailing camp and a sailing center? Many generous and dedicated volunteers is what it takes. BCSC only had one paid employee, our Camp Director and everything else is handled by volunteers who work all year to make this place look beautiful, run efficiently and create lasting memories for everyone who comes in contact with us.
From our Board which runs the facility and the camp to weekly volunteers who plant and trim bushes and repair all of the boats (including keeping the motorboat engines running all season). We run a Home School outreach program and other programs for local children who otherwise would not get a chance to be out on the water to our High School Racing Team and camp racing teams. We have a Special Olympics racing team that practices at our facility as well as some college sailing.
We grant scholarships for campers and offer 3 different camping experiences, sailing, fishing and Bay exploration. All of these activities require equipment that needs to be cared for and our volunteers do whatever need to be done to accomplish this. We are also given donations of boats and equipment that we incorporate into our program when we can. If not they are turned into assets that we can use.
Our group meets every Tuesday morning for around 3 hours year round and then if needed on other days. Numerous hours spent planning and preparing for the fabulous Summer Season we all look forward to!
